Hovering Around
WISH-TV has a report on the City of Indianapolis purchasing a hovercraft. (Hat Tip: Frugal Hoosiers). Fire Chief Greeson defended the purchase:
"If we have a weather related incident in the winter time, whether it's snow or blizzard, where we cannot reach residents by normal means of transportation, a hovercraft can maneuver over the snow."
Or maybe they could just plow the streets.
Time to call the Bart line and suggest where they can save money! Hey Bart, get a CLUE!

The story finally made the light of day. This was noted several weeks ago on IndyUndercover.
One part of the story I saw noted how that dam rescue a year or two ago would have been an ideal use for a hovercraft. Somehow, I fail to see that being better than the helo they DID use.
Rushing water over a spillway, sucking everything down into it's deadly turbulence, seems like rather risky place for a floating craft.
But priorities are priorities, and dealing with non-working emergency buttons on MECA radios is not nearly as much fun as acquiring a sporty boat.

Remind me again how many times a Hovercraft was NEEDED to affect a rescue over the last 10 years.
And how much is it going to cost taxpayers? Including maintenance, upkeep, etc.?

Too bad that $60,000 could not have been used for something we are currently paying with tax dollars in the budget. Then that would have freed up $60K in the budget for something else.
