Bartman Part 2: How soon can we forget?

After seeing our post yesterday, a reader sent us this other chilling Gary Varvel cartoon:

How Soon We Forget: Frank Anderson Edition

Last week, we commented on Marion County Sheriff Frank Anderson's plan to commission an Indiana University study on whether Indianapolis and Marion County need more cops on the street. While we still stand by our assertions that the daily crime reports on TV and in the newspaper are enough to convince the average Indianapolis resident we might need more street cops. However, we now have a new source to back up our claims: Marion County Sheriff Frank Anderson.

We stumbled across our old June 1st, 2007, edition if the Indianapolis Star and found an editorial entitled,"As it awaits more officers, IMPD must get more creative." The Star editors pointed out,

"As high as those numbers may seem," (120 unfilled positions on the IMPD force) "they do not come close to the number of officers cited in a study done three years ago" (2004) "by the sheriff" (Frank Anderson) "before his department merged with the Indianapolis Police Department to form IMPD. That study found it would take an additional 900 additional officers to adequately patrol the city."

This begs the question: What has changed in the past three years to require a new study? The only thing we can think of is that crime under the Peterson/Anderson administration has increased so much that 900 may be too few to adequately secure our city. Nonetheless, this should not stop IMPD from hiring new officers now.
